Dignity and Opportunity for All - 7 July

Event - Dignity and Opportunity for All: Securing the rights of disabled people in the austerity era, London 7 July.

Event | 02.06.14

SECURING THE RIGHTS OF DISABLED PEOPLE IN THE AUSTERITY ERA

Even at a time of economic austerity, the UK, as a party to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, is under an obligation to respect, protect and fulfill the human rights of disabled people.

There is a real risk, however, that the economic, social and cultural rights of disabled people are being violated in the UK.

The landmark report Dignity and Opportunity for All from the Just Fair Consortium evaluates the extent to which concerns highlighted by the relevant UN treaty monitoring bodies and the parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights, in relation to threats to disabled people’s enjoyment of these rights, have been realised.

In doing so, the report offers groundbreaking and comprehensive analysis of the state of disabled people's enjoyment of the rights to independent living, work, fair and just conditions of employment, social security and an adequate standard of living.
